barbeque & birds of paradise

As always, Jinx is serving up the best bb que in town and today- heirloom tomatoes.  The inside of the Pit's Top is a photo pickers paradise as are Tim Laman's birds - served up in the Trees Exhibit and on the stage.  And, Vince Musi has the Festival off & running.

a little wine

Can't come to C-ville without a visit to Blenheim and Virginia Wineworks.  Only downside - my hotel room resembles a drive through carry-out...

the rockbridge boys

Had the good fortune today to spend a little time with two of the guys who build Rockbridge Guitars, Brian Calhoun & Adam McNeil.  Working out of their temporary shop in Gordonsville, the boys are turning out some incredible instruments made from mahogany, cocobolo, red spruce and Brazilian rosewood.  Not familiar with their sound?  Think Dave Matthews & that should tell you all you need to know.

Look3 week

Seven years, Look3 Festival of the Photograph, Charlottesville Virginia.  Arrived this afternoon to daylilies, storms and THE light.  As Joel Sartore would say, "man, you just can't pass up light like that."

summer workshop

Another successful NKU Summer Workshop has come to an end.  Ably assisted by Michael, Cassie & Rachel, we covered the gamut.  Inspired by the FSA photographers of the 1930's and '40's we field tripped to Covington & worked in B/W; created panoramas, on and off campus; photographed NKU at dawn; wandered through Spring Grove Cemetery; and followed winding Kentucky backroads to Rabbit Hash, the Anderson Ferry and ended where we began - on the south shore with our lenses pointed north.  Too much fun.

as for architects

Last week, the Wall Street Journal ask me to photograph the Tonkens House in Cincinnati.  Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the mid 1950's for $25,000, it is currently on the market for $1.78 million.  Made of concrete and glass, it is classic Wright - flat roof, no basement, no garage, no attic.  Red floors & drive, gold leaf ceilings, Philippine mahogany throughout - it is a vision of Usonian architecture.  Fun to photograph, but I could only think of the two architects in my family, Louis Studer & Mark Hess, shaking their heads as only someone with common sense could do.

back home again

NKU Women's Soccer Alumni Game 2013.  They say you can't go back - but this afternoon, for a short time, you could have fooled me. And Maggie.
