the old armory

Stairs ascend to double doors that have seen a thousand hands.  Inside, old voices linger - cheers & chants.  Balls await, for the light to become more.

waffle, waffle

So, what do you do on a sunny fall Sunday?  Rake leaves, get the football tailgate party ready?  Maybe, but better yet, hunt down Marty Meersman's waffle truck & chow down.  Marty was in Alexandria today and we did our best to add to his retirement fund. And the waffle photos?  The subjects were gone before I could raise the camera...

the End

All stories come to an end & I think another part of my "Last Farmers" essay has reached that point.  This summer I photographed Daryl Cutter as he sold off his dairy herd and moved closer to retirement.  Today I visited Earl Dawson one last time.  His farm remains pretty much the same - hay in the barn, sheep in the pasture, but the tractors are quiet now.  His widow Janet told me how much he had enjoyed the Cincinnati Magazine story and all the attention he received because of it. The family even used my photos at his funeral service.  "That one of Earl in the straw hat," Janet said, "everyone loved that photo.  That was Earl." And that, is more than enough.

what's left

Sixty years on - empty store fronts, quiet streets and proclamations of a better time.  In the winter of 1953-54 the town of Milan was taken on quite a ride when their high school basketball team won the Indiana State Championship.  The story is told that on the day after the victory 40,000 people descended on the town of 1,100 - lining the state road for more than 13 miles.  What a sight that must have been.

the porch

The kitchen table, the fire pit and the back porch.  Enough said.

you can go home

Two weekends in a row, back to our hometown - Worthington.  A class reunion (Elise's), a family reunion and a reunion with old friends & old places.  The house where most of my childhood memories live (the 1960's in suburbia - what could be better), the track where dreams were born and dashed, the trees identified for an Eagle Scout project and The Rock (decorated by Elise's class).  Whispers from the past.

moving on

Two little girl's voices hang in the air, a lone motorcycle passes, the sun's last light hits the pin oak & backlights a hollyhock, the pool sits empty.  Summer is coming to an end.
